  • Description

South Korea held off a strong challenge from Malaysia to win the Merdeka Soccer tournament at Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka stadium on Sunday (17 August).

The South Koreans, kicked off in front of a crowd of 50,000.

But Malaysia, the defending champions, snatched the initiative when left winger Visavanathan sent a high cross which Korean goalkeeper, Kwan Ee Woon, just managed to save.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 32nd minute when striker Lee Young Moo latched onto a corner kick and sent a low shot past the Malaysian goalkeeper to give South Korea the 1-0 lead.

The Koreans then settled down to a defensive game and seemed content to just hold off successive Malaysian attacks in the second half.

South Korea's win gave it an unbeaten record in the month-long tournament, held each year to mark Malaysia's National Day.
