Background: Transport unions belonging to Italy's main CGIL-CSIL-UIL Federation held a 24-hour national strike on November 10 and a rally in Rome to call for a change in proposed social security legislation. The strike involved port and shipyard workers, merchant seamen and road haulage drivers. Three hundred thousand people were involved in the stoppage and fifty thousand workers attended the Rome rally. Independent taxi drivers, railway and haulage porters were also planning to carry out 24-hours of strikes by the end of the same week as part of their campaign to press for a reorganisation of Italy's social security system for the self-employed.
