  • Description

CEREMONIES HAVE BEGUN IN FRANCE TO MARK THE 900TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NORMAN CONQUEST OF ENGLAND. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) SAW THE OPENING CEREMONY, AT THE ABBEY OF BEC-HELLUIN, NEAR BRIONNE, NORMANDY. THE FRENCH MINISTER OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, M. JEAN DE BROGLIE, UNVEILED A PLAQUE COMMEMORATING "ALL THE NORMANS OF FRANCE AND ENGLAND WHO OVER THE CENTURIES DIED FIGHTING EACH OTHER OR FIGHTING SIDE BY SIDE."
IT WAS FROM THE ABBEY OF BEC HELLUIN THAT THE ABBOT LANFRANC SET OUT NEARLY 900 YEARS AGO, AFTER THE NORMAN CONQUEST, TO BECOME ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY. BRITISH AND FRENCH RELIGIOUS LEADERS ATTENDED THE CEREMONY, AS DID SIR PATRICK REILLY, BRITISH AMBASSADOR TO PARIS.

    M. SANGUINETTI, IN A SPEECH, SAID BRITAIN AND FRANCE SHARED THE SAME CONCEPTION OF A EUROPEAN UNION OF FREE AND SOVEREIGN NATIONS.

THE COMMEMORATION CEREMONIES ARE TO CONTINUE FOR SIX MONTHS, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CHANNEL. THEY END ON 14 OCTOBER AT HASTINGS, ENGLAND, WHERE THE ENGLISH UNDER KING HAROLD WERE FINALLY DEFEATED BY THE NORMANS LED BY WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR.
