    A CEILING CRASHED DOWN MOMENTS AFTER THE FIREMEN HAD RETREATED FROM A BID TO REACH THE UPPER FLOORS.RED HOT SHEETS OF METAL FROM ESCALATORS ALSO FELL IN FRONT OF THE FIREMEN.

    DAMAGE TO THE STORE - OWNED BY "C.AND A." (BRENNIKMEIJER) - MAY EXCEED 5,000,000 GUILDERS.

    GREAT SHOWERS OF SPARKS WERE THROWN OVER PARTS OF THE CITY BEFORE FIREMEN GOT THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL AT 8 A.M.AFTER A FIVE-HOUR BATTLE.THEY SAID THE STORE WAS SO COMPLETELY GUTTED IT WOULD BE VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DISCOVER THE CAUSE.

    CIVIL DEFENCE MEN WERE ALERTED TO GUARD THE PALACE FROM FLYING SPARKS.AMSTERDAM'S FIRE DEPARTMENT BROUGHT IN ALL AVAILABLE PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT INCLUDING A FIREBOAT AND RESERVE UNITS.
