  • Description

The Vickers Aircraft Company added yet another chapter to the success story of the Viscount Airlines today when they announced the sale of the 400th aircrafts of this type.

And, while the milestone aircraft rolled off the assembly line, work was already going ahead on the Vickers Vanguard airliner - worthy successor to the amazingly successful Vanguard and already on order to British European Airways and Trans Canada Airlines.

It was in 1945 that the first details of the Viscount went onto the drawing board - details that led to the flight of the prototype model of the aircraft in 1948.

This was the Type 630 which weighed 40,000 pounds and carried 32 passengers.

Two years later, BEA put the Viscount into experimental service on the London-Paris route for three weeks - a move that was followed in 1953 with the introduction of a regular Viscount service between the two capitals.

Since then airlines all over the world have placed orders for this, the first turbo prep airliner to go into regular service anywhere in the world, with BEA, TOA and the American Capital Airlines being among the leading purchasers.

For example. When the figure stood at 374, the total sale valued at GBP143, 250,000 of which GBP117,000,000 had been sold to foreign companies.

Latest of the class is the 800 Viscount which is capable of carrying 60 passengers and makes the journey from London to Paris in just under the hour.

New the eyes of airline operators are on the Vickors Viscount - successor to the Viscount - which will be available in a variety of versions capable of carrying from 70 to 128 passengers.

With 40 of these airliners already on order, Rolls Royce - makers of the famous turbo-prop engine - expect that the new airliner will be capable of flying at speeds up 410 mph.
