TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 1) REPORTER: "Excuse me sir, what do you think of Andrew Young?"

SOLDIER: " Personally I think.... if he's the best the States can produce I think they're pretty poor."

(SEQ. 2) REPORTER: " Do you think he's against the whites in Southern Africa?"

    WHITE MAN: "Most definitely."

    REPORTER: "Why is that?"

SAME MAN: "Considering all the statements he's made to date I think he hasn't got the white man at heart at all."

(SEQ. 3) ANOTHER WHITE MAN: "I suppose he's got a job to do, I'm not very impressed with him particularly."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's against the whites in this part of the world?"

    SAME MAN: "Not necessarily, no."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's playing a fair line?"

SAME MAN: "Not a particularly fair line no, but then United Nations never has been renowned for a fair line, has it? It has to be an angled line, but I don't think it's particularly anti-white."

(SEQ. 4) ANOTHER WHITE MAN: "Not much."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's against the whites in Southern Africa?"

SAME MAN: "Yes of course he is."

    REPORTER: "Why is that sir?"

SAME MAN: "Because he is. He's a kaffir. He doesn't like whites. Well, I think he's a most unsuitable man to represent his country if that's what you mean."

(SEQ. 5) WHITE WOMAN: "I loathe him. I detest him - personally, I'd like to take a contract out on him."

(SEQ. 6) BLACK MAN: "He's fantastic."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's got the right policies for Southern Africa?"

SAME MAN: "I think so, yes."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's going to bring majority rule to Southern Africa?"

SAME MAN: "No. I don't know. It's rather too fast to say."

REPORTER: "Do you think he's against the whites in this part of the world?"

ANOTHER BLACK MAN: "It's rather very fast for his ideas."

REPORTER: "Do you think he'll bring majority rule to South Africa?"

SAME MAN: "I don't think so Personally I don't think so."

    REPORTER: "Why?"

SAME MAN: Because, I know, he seems one sided. For the blacks, anti-whites. He's pro-black, anti-white."

REPORTER: "Do you think that's a bad thing?"

SAME MAN: "It's better he should be neutral.....if fairness is lacking......"

Background: INTRODUCTION: The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr Andrew Young, said in his recent visit to South Africa that blacks in Rhodesia had only half the life expectancy of whites. He also spoke of disease and malnutrition in the former British colony, but a spokesman for Rhodesia's minority white government said on Monday (23 May) that Mr Young should have checked his facts - and that Rhodesians shouldn't take his remarks too seriously. In the Rhodesian capital, Salisbury, a reporter asked Rhodesians what they thought.
