The Foreign Minister of The Gambia, Mr. Alioune Badara Ndiaye, has travelled to Dakar for talks on economic integration and co-operation.
He was greeted by Senegal's Foreign Minister, Mr. Assane Seck, with whom he held much of his talks in Dakar. The Gambia, a small enclave of Senegal which straddles the navigable Gambia River, Africa's only good waterway, has always been concerned about secure relations with its bigger neighbour.
The two countries concluded a Treaty of Association in 1967 and a Joint Defence and Security Agreement in 1971. The trend has been a gradual development of a union through economic integration and co-operation.
