  • Description

ADEN BUSTLED WITH ACTIVITY TODAY (SUNDAY) AFTER A WEEK OF GENERAL STRIKES WHICH PARALYSED THE LIFE OF THE PROTECTORATE AND LED TO THE WORST ANTI-BRITISH VIOLENCE BY ARAB NATIONALISTS.

THE STRIKES AND VIOLENCE WERE PLANNED TO COINCIDE WITH THE VISIT OF THE THREE-MAN UNITED NATIONS MISSION TO ADEN. THE MISSION LEFT ADEN ON FRIDAY AFTER SAYING BRITISH AUTHORITIES HAD NOT EXTENDED THE TYPE OF COOPERATION THE MISSION MEMBERS WERE ENTITLED TO EXPECT.

YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THERE WERE A FEW ISOLATED INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE. TWO ARABS, INCLUDING A TRADE UNION LEADER, WERE SHOT DEAD IN THE SUBURBS OF SHEIKH OTHMAN AND MANSOURA.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT, DISRUPTED FOR NEARLY A WEEK WAS RESUMED, AND SHOPS, WHICH HAD BEEN FIRMLY SHUTTERED OPENED AGAIN FOR BUSINESS. SERVICEMEN, THEIR WIVES AND FAMILIES WERE ABLE TO MOVE FREELY. BUT THE STREETS REMAINED LINED WITH TROOPS AT THE ALERT. IN THE PORT, WORK HAD RETURNED ALMOST TO NORMAL, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE A LARGE NUMBER OF SHIPS TO BE HANDLED.

THE ONLY ATTACK YESTERDAY AT BRITISH SERVICEMEN WAS IN THE CRATER AREA WHEN A GRENADE WAS THROWN AT A GROUP OF ROYAL NAVY OFFICERS SEARCHING FOR THE BODY OF AN ARAB CHILD BELIEVED TO HAVE DROWNED IN LAST WEEK'S FLOODING. ONE OFFICER WAS SLIGHTLY WOUNDED. THE GRENADE THROWER WAS SHOT DEAD.
