  • Description

The British Government was asked Wednesday (31 May) to withdraw its representative in Salisbury, Mr. Alac Ward. The Rhodesian Government made the request because it had been refused similar facilities for a Rhodesian official in London.

A statement issued by the Office of the Rhodesian Prime Minister, Mr. Ian Smith, said Mr. Ward would be leaving within the next few days.

The statement said the British representative had been allowed to remain ion Rhodesia to look after English affairs during the test of acceptability for the Anglo-Rhodesian settlement. After the Peace Commission report was published, Rhodesia made a request for reciprocal facilities. This request was denied and a s a result Mr. Ward was asked to leave.

Mr. Ward, a first secretary in Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, would not comment on the announcement.
