Background: Mayor Gaston Deferre of Marseilles, who is likely to be President Charles De Gaulle's opponent in the next French election, conferred with President Johnson at the White House Tuesday (24 March).

When he emerged smiling, Deferre told reporters he and Mr Johnson had discussed a number of items, including Southeast Asia. Deferre did not disclose the exact content of his talk, but he said he emphatically disagreed with General De Gaulle's proposals for neutralising its ties with the Soviet Union and China and he said he saw no signs of this.
