Background: More than 30 countries from all over the world took part in this year's International Fair in Khartoum. The Fair was opened on Thursday (21 January) by Sudan's first vice-president and minister of Defence General Abdel-Magid Khalil. There was a wide range of goods and industrial equipment on display from the very latest high technology industrial equipment to traditional Sudanese arts crafts like hand-weaving and pottery. On the opening day the official visitors were treated to a display of traditional African dancing by a troupe. The theme of this year's fair was decentralisation as a way of prompting trade and investment. The theme is particularly opposite to Sudan which has embarked on a programme of decentralisation to improve the economic situation in the regions. The fair, which closes on 5 February, gives a chance for many of the leading western industrial firms to display their latest technology.
