  • Description

The United nations Security Council has decided unanimously to tighten the economic sanctions which have been in operation against Rhodesia since 1968.

All 15 members of the council co-sponsored a resolution passed on Tuesday night (6 April) to extend the scope of its boycott of the breakaway British colony. The decision is mandatory on all United nations member states.

The resolution was specifically aimed at preventing Rhodesia's imports and exports from obtaining insurance cover. This would apply to West German, Japanese and french cars which have been finding their way into Rhodesia. It would also cover Rhodesian chrome ore imported into the United States in contravention of the embargo.

Another clause in the resolution is intended t prevent international companies like hotel chains, credit card firms and car rental business from operating in Rhodesia.

Speaking on the resolution, Tanzania's Ambassador Salim Ahmed Salim said that although the resolution did not go far enough his delegation believed that it was a step in the right direction.
