  • Description

A heavily guarded convoy, carrying vital oil and ammunition, reached Phnom Penh on Tuesday (28 March) after sailing up the Mekong River for two days.

Khmer troops in Phnom Penh have been desperately short of fuel and ammunition for nearly two weeks. Constant communist assaults on supply depots and rocket attacks on the capital's airport made the safe arrival of Tuesday's convoy vital to military operations.

River gunboats kept a sharp lookout along the banks of the Mekong for possible ambushes, while helicopters provided air cover. Earlier in the week a single tanker which reached besieged Phnom Penh was sunk at her moorings. A second was also mined and badly damaged.
