  • Description

At a recent press conference in Elizabethville, capital of Katanga Province, Moise Tshombe - President of the internationally unrecognised Katanga Republic - gave his views on the current Congo situation.

He said the Congo's true government - concealed behind the "straw man" Lumumba-consisted of Guinea's Sekou Toure, Egypt's Masser, Ferhat Abbas of the Algerian FLN, and Serge Michel, Lumumba's Minister of Information. The regime had lost any appearance of legality, and had deteriorated into a Marxist tyranny.

Mr. Tshombe continued with a protest against the arrest of Jean Bolikango, Bangala tribal leader, and former Foreign Minister. Accusations that he had plotted against the lives of Lumumba and President Kasavubu were absurb; the so-called "plot against the state" - his wish to declare an independent Equatorial Republic - was equally absurb.

Finally, Mr. Tshombe called down "the vengeance of Heaven" on Lumumba's troops. He said they had committed numerous atrocities, and he could confirm a massacre at a technical school where "many hundreds of men, women and children" had been killed - a probable reference to Sept 8 slaughter at St. Jean de Bakwa mission, outside Bakwanga.
