    Background: FALKLAND ISLANDS/BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

The British Prime Minister Mrs Margaret Thatcher is continuing her visit to the Falkland Islands. On January 10, she toured the sites of battles in the ten-week war between Argentina and Britain. She fired one of the guns used during the re-capture of the capital, Port Stanley, and was also grated the freedom of the islands. This was announced at a public meeting she attended at Port Stanley town hall. In her speech, Mrs Thatcher thanked the islanders and the soldiers for their courage during the hostilities, and said she was confident the local community would strive to build a better future because of what they had suffered in the past year. Her surprise visit to the Falklands has aroused indignation in Argentine government circules. President Reynaldo Bignone has echoed an earlier statement by Foreign Minister Juan Ramon Aguirre Lanari, describing Mrs Thatcher's presence in the islands as a "new act of provocation and arrogance". The Soviet Union also condemned the visit, while all major Argentine newspapers reported the event. the Peronist daily La Voz announced the visit under the headline "London installs nuclear arms in the Malvinas", and the popular tabloid Cronica carried front page headlines saying "An act of war" and "The English hyena continues nosing round our Malvinas". Despite this political storm, popular reaction has remained minimal. Most Argentines are either on holiday or enjoying the mid-Summer heat.
