  • Description

UNITED STATES ARMY CAPTAIN ERNEST MEDINA DENIED ON WEDNESDAY (1 APRIL) A CHARGE -- MADE ONLY A FEW HOURS EARLIER -- THAT HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PREMEDITATED MURDER OF ALL SOUTH VIETNAMESE CITIZENS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE MY LAI INCIDENT IN MARCH, 1968. MEDINA TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA, THAT HE HAD NOT ORDERED A MASSACRE NOR HAD SEEN ONE TAKE PLACE.

MEDINA, 34, WAS THE IMMEDIATE SUPERIOR OF LIEUTENANT WILLIAN CALLEY, WHO LED THE PLATOON THAT SWEPT THROUGH THE HAMLET AND ALLEGEDLY KILLED AN ESTIMATED 175 TO 200 CIVILIANS. THE WORDING OF THE MURDER ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MEDINA MADE IT CLEAR HE WAS BEING CHARGED AS A PRINCIPAL INVOLVED IN CAUSING THE KILLINGS, NOT WITH ACTUALLY CARRYING THEM OUT HIMSELF.

SO FAR, THE ARMY HAS CHARGED 25 OFFICERS AND MEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE INCIDENT.

IN MY LAI, IN FEBRUARY, GRAVESTONES WERE PLACED OVER SOME OF THE GRAVES OF THE VILLAGERS ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY THE AMERICAN TROOPS. THE GRAVESTONES WERE BEING PREPARED BY A FORMER MY LAI VILLAGER LIVING IN A NEARBY REFUGEE CAMP.
