  • Description

An Argentine Army Colone, kidnapped by leftwing guerrillas more than six months ago, escaped from his captors Tuesday (7 December).

SYNOPSIS: Colonel Alberto Pita was snatched by guerrillas in Gonnet, 50 kms (30 miles) south of Buenos Aires on May 30. The guerrillas, calling themselves the People's Liberation Army (ELP), cornered him with four cars while he was driving home. He was imprisoned in his own house throughout the captive period. The Colonel was appointed head of the powerful General Labour Confederation (CGT) one month after the military ousted former President Maria Estela Peron last March. The house, although badly dishevelled was only slightly damaged and no-one was hurt.

Colonel Pita managed to sneak out of the house on Tuesday morning. He escaped barefoot and in his pajamas from a one by two metre cellar after digging a hole in a rain-soaked mud wall. After walking 150 metres along the road, he was picked up by a municipal truck and driven to a nearby army barracks. The kidnappers are widely known for attacks on armed forces, police arsenals and gun-running.

Heavily armed troops now patrol the Gonnet region after left-wing attackers machine-gunned the Colonel's house on Thursday.

Troops have been combing the vicinity in search of further terrorist hide-outs. The campaign against the guerrillas has been stepped up recently. Special military courts have been set up to try terrorist suspects and they're empowered to impose the death penalty.
