  • Description

The crisis continues on the Island of Cyprus despite British and American efforts to bring about a settlement. Turkish warships carrying troops have been reported at sea, and Greece is reported to have put her armed forces on the alert.

The most savage fighting to date on the island broke out last Tuesday (11 February) in the port city of Limassol, where Greek Cypriots outnumber Turkish Cypriots by five to one. (The city has a population of 44 thousands). A British spokesman said ten Turks had been killed and at least eight wounded but that the actual death toll might be much higher. An earlier estimate said at least 50 dead and 100 wounded.

What began as sporadic gunfighting turned into something resembling full scale war. Greek Cypriot attacked Turkish Cypriot strong points throughout the city. By Thursday morning (13 February) most of the Turkish Cypriot minority was crowded into a small perimeter including the mosque and a community center which was being used as a field hospital. Improvised fortifications had been flung up around the perimeter, behind which the Turks waited for an expected Greek attack. The Greek Cypriots kept up a steady fire of small arms, which the Turkish Cypriots did not return because they were low on ammunition. British ambulances evacuated some of the Turkish wounded, and British patrols were out in the streets. They were fired on by both sides.

By Thursday evening, the British commander had been able to achieve an effective cease fire agreement, ending the major fighting.

During the fighting on Thursday, an NBC camera team reached the Turkish field hospital and made these pictures while the fighting was going on.
