Background: Libya and Algeria will stand united to support the Palestinian and Western Sahara causes. The announcement was made by the President of Algeria, Houari Boumedienne at the end of a two-day visit to algeria by Libyan Head of State, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi on Monday (29 December).
The visit was mainly taken up with talks between the two leaders at Hassi Messaoud in the Sahara, 800 Kilometres ( about 500 miles) from Algiers.
President Boumedienne and Colonel Gaddafi last met at syrte in Libya on 11 December and have agreed to consult with each other regularly.
Before the Libyan leader's departure President Boumedienne told newsmen that Algeria and Libya had agreed to resist all provocations aimed against them, whatever their nature and wherever they take place. Any attack against one would be considered by the other as directed against itself, he said.
In the actual situation of tension over Moroccan and Mauretahian claims on the Spanish sahara, Presidents Boumedienne and Gueddaffi have already had one meeting in Tripoli on Decllth Guedaffi arrived for a return visit on Sunday 28th Dec and had six hours of talks with President Boumedienne at the Algiers oil base at Hassi Messaoud, where he stayed the night to continue talks on Monday.
SYNOPSIS: Libyan President, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, arrived in Hassi Messaoud in the Sahara region of Algeria on sunday for a two-day visit.
He was met at the airport by Algeria's President Houari Boumedienro and other officials.
Most of this visit was spent on lengthy discussions between the two leaders.
The leaders later announced that Algeria and Libya had decided to stand united in their support of the Palestinian and Western sahara causes and would regard any hostile action against one as an action against the other.
President Boumedienne and Colonel Gaddafi met earlier in December in Libya and have agreed to consult each other regularly to discuss matters of mutual interest.
