    About 100 people demonstrated in the streets of Saigon, South Vietnam on Friday (4 October) calling for the resignation of President Nguyen Van Thieu.

    The demonstration was composed mainly of Buddhist nuns, together with opposition members of the South Vietnamese National Assembly. They marched to the National Assembly building carrying banners and placards and chanting slogans.

    At one point about 12 nuns broke away form the march and chased a loudspeaker van through the city centre after it tried to drown protest speeches with loud music.

    Also on Friday Senator Vu Van Mau, head the of the Buddhist-backed National Reconciliation Movement, issued a statement calling on President Thieu to step down for the sake of national ???cord.

    The 26-member Social Democratic Bloc in the National Assembly and 15 members of other opposition factions called for Mr. Thieu's resignation in statements issued on Thursday (3 october).
