  • Description

Australian Evonne Cawley defeated the Dutch player, Elly Vessies-Appel, on Tuesday (22 June) in the first round of the women's singles in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships.

SYNOPSIS: In the final game of the first set, Mrs. Cawley - nearest camera - led five games-to-two with the score at 40-30 in the eighth. Mrs. Cawley dominated the game, although she lost this point.

Mrs. Cawley - the former Miss. Goolagong - soon recovered her service and went on to win the first set from her Dutch opponent six-two.

In the second set, after five games all, the score was 40-30 in favour of Mrs. Cawley facing camera.

Mrs. Vessies-Appel, nearest camera, served and lost another point on service, to go down 6-5 in the second set.

Serving for the match, Mrs. Cawley - nearest camera - regained her commanding style over Mrs. Vessies-Appel to win the match. Miss. Cawley is a strong favourite to win the women's championship. In the absence of last year's champion, American Billie Jean King, and Margaret Court of Australia, the other favourite is American Chris Evert. Judging by the betting, both Mrs. Cawley and Miss. Evert should face each other in the final.
