  • Description

Soon after his arrival in Vienna, June 30 - for an 8-day official visit - Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev drove to the Ballhausplatz for official calls on Austrian President Schaerf and Chancellor Raab. Very few people were present to watch his arrival.

Later, the Russian Premier laid wreaths at the Austrian and Soviet war memorials. About 2,000 people gathered, and isolated cheers came from uniformed communist youth members waving small red flags. Following this, Premier Khrushchev, with his wife and youngest daughter, Elena, was entertained to lunch by President Schaerf. In the evening he was to attend the state opera for a performance of Die Zauberflote.

Mr. Zorin, head of the Soviet delegation at the 10-Power disarmament conference, also arrived in Vienna, June 30, direct from the collapsed talks in Geneva. He said that he did not know whether he would be accompanying Mr. Khrushchev on his tour Austria.

The Russian leader and his party - who were staying at the Hotel Imperial - will depart on a 500-mile provincial tour of Austria after 3 days in the capital. They will travel in a special mail bus fitted with radio and television. Only two hours of Mr. Khrushchev's programme have been set aside for formal talks with the Austrian Government and these are expected to cover the trade agreement included in the Austro-Soviet treaty of 1955.
