Background: Argentines in Buenos Aires celebrated St. Gaetan's Day in the capital on Saturday (7 August). St. Gaetan is the patron saint of workers and the celebrations come at a time when Argentines are being asked to make sacrifices to restore the country's shattered economy.

SYNOPSIS: The ceremonies were centred around the San Cayetano church in Liniers, one of the capital's most densely populated suburbs. The church houses the image of St. Gaetan, and every year on August the seventh, celebrations are held there.

Argentina's economy is currently suffering from the effects of the former Peron government. The economy minister, Martinez de Hoz, has said there are moves to lower the present unemployment rate, estimated at six per cent. He has asked the workers to make sacrifices in the next six months, saying demands for higher salaries at this stage would lead only to even higher inflation. Business leaders have also been asked to play their part in keeping prices down.

The government has said a good harvest this year is necessary to reactivate the Argentine economy. They have also introduced various credit measures, including those aimed at personal credit to allow people to buy things like cars. Credit is also earmarked for reactivating the building sector, one of Argentina's big employers. The government estimates that the economic situation will be stabilised by the end of the year.
