  • Description

POLICE BATTLED WITH 1,000 STUDENTS IN ATHENS LAST NIGHT (FRIDAY) FOLLOWING THE DECISION BY PRIME MINISTER PANAYOTIS KANELLOPOULOS TO DISSOLVE PARLIAMENT IN PREFERENCE TO ASKING THE HOUSE FOR A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE. THE DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED NEAR ATHENS UNIVERSITY CHANTING SLOGANS AND SEVERAL WERE REPORTED INJURED IN SCUFFLES BEFORE THE CROWD DISPERSED.

DESPITE THE DEMONSTRATIONS THE 12-DAY-OLD KANELLOPOULOS GOVERNMENT TODAY (SATURDAY) WENT AHEAD WITH PLANS FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS ON 28 MAY. IN A NATIONWIDE BROADCAST MR. KANELLOPOULOS, LEADER OF THE CONSERVATIVE NATIONAL RADICAL UNION, PLEDGED TO PERSEVERE WITH HIS MISSION -- PAVING THE WAY FOR THE ELECTIONS.

THE PRESENT PARLIAMENT HAD NINE-MONTHS OF ITS FOUR-YEAR TERM STILL LEFT TO RUN BUT MR. KANELLOPOULOS FACED OPPOSITION FROM STRONG PARLIAMENTARY GROUPS. THE NEW PARLIAMENT WILL ASSEMBLE ON 5 JULY AFTER THE ELECTIONS.

MR. KANELLOPOULOS FORMED A GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING THE RESIGNATION JUST OVER A FORTNIGHT AGO OF IOANNIS PARASKEVOLOULOS AFTER A ROW TRIGGERED BY FORMER PRIME MINISTER GEORGE PAPANDREOU'S MOVE TO HAVE PARLIAMENTARY IMMUNITY OF DEPUTIES EXTENDED UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTIONS.

THIS WAS SEEN BY THE RADICAL UNION AS AN ATTEMPT TO PROTECT THE CENTRE UNION LEADER'S SON, DEPUTY ANDREAS PAPANDREOU, FROM COURT PROCEEDINGS ARISING OUT OF HIS ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN A CONSPIRACY LAST YEAR. YESTERDAY'S DISSOLUTION OF PARLIAMENT MEANS MR. ANDREAS PAPANDREOU IS NO LONGER SHIELDED.
