Ludwig Van Beethoven, the great composer, was born in Bonn on December 15th or 16th 1770. Now the West German capital is preparing for the 200th anniversary of his birth with an exhibition at the house where he was born of objects he used during his life.
Beethoven was the son of a singer and the room where Ludwig was born now contains a bust of the artist. During the 200th anniversary celebrations visitors are expected to flock to the house to see the exhibition.
Apart from a short visit to Vienna, Beethoven spent the first 22 years of his life in Bonn, composing some 45 works in the period. They consist mainly of chamber music and piano pieces.
Among relics that visitors can see are a lock of Beethoven's hair and instruments he used. including ear trumpets and an inkstand.
Examples of the composer's manuscripts are also on display.
The Organ on which he played is also to be seen, and the birthplace exhibition coincides with concerts in many parts of the world celebrating his work. Over these activities stands the memory of the man himself, a musical genius who, plagued by increasing deafness, gave the musical world some of its greatest compositions.
Beethoven left Bonn for Vienna in 1792 and he died there aged 57 years. But the city of his birthplace, Bonn, remembers him as one of its greatest and best-loved sons.
