  • Description

The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) recently elected a new leader to replace the founder-President Dr Eduardo Mondlane who was assassinated in Dar es Salaam, months ago. The new President is Samora Machel who has directed Frelimo military operations for the last two years.

In striking contrast to Dr Mondlane, quiet western-educated intellectual, Machel embodies the popular conceptions of a freedom-fighter. He is strong, bearded, usually dressed in denims and touch-spoken. He spends most of his time in the "liberated areas" of Mozambique, the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Tete. In these areas, Frelimo claims to administer the lives of over one million Mozambicans. Frelimo's 10,000 freedom-fighters under arms conduct guerrilla campaign against the Portuguese from bases in these areas.

Recently he returned to the Party Headquarters in Dar es Salaam for consultations with other leaders, including the Vice-President Marcelino Do Santos. Mr Machel said, on Tuesday (June 23), that the destruction of the projected Cabora Bassa dam remained Frelimo's prime military target. The dam is being built by an international consortium on the Zambesi River.

He said the withdrawal of the Swedish electrical firm "ASEA" from the project, following pressure of public opinion, was a "major contribution to our peoples." He added that the "Cabora Bassa has political, economic and strategic aspects. That is why military action alone cannot stop the dam."
