  • Description

The Sultan of Zanzibar, second largest island on the East African coast, celebrates his 80th birthday August 26.

The waterfront palace has been the home of the Sultan, His Highness Seyyid Khalifa bin Harub, since his accession in 1911. He is seen here, posing in the throneroom with the Sultana.

Efficient police directing modern day traffic contrasts sharply with the island's colourful history of slave trading, piracy and ivory poaching. Tippu Tib House was the home of ZANZIBAR's most famous slave trader, Hamed bin Mohammed el-Marjebi.

Narrow secretive streets harbour ghosts of poor unfortunates dragged off down these very same streets to the slave markets.

Now, closes are the principal product of the six hundred and forty square male Arab state off the East African coastline. Introduce to them in the 18th century it has flourished as the main industry maintaining the 270,000 population.

Copra, obtained form the dry coconut husks, is the other staple industry. Once a romantic dream from an Arabian Night --- controlled by Portugal for over 100 years -- Zanzibar has been a British Protectorate since 1890.

And although we secretly long for a moment of its colourful past we wish prosperity to its polyglot people ... and a very happy birthday to the Sultan.
