  • Description

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned Portugal for the November invasion of Guinea, and has demanded full compensation for damage to life and property. The fifteen-nation council also agreed that the presence of Portuguese colonialism in Africa posed a serious threat to the peace and security of independent African states.

All of the council's members voted in favour of the resolution with the exception of the United States, France, Britain and Spain, which abstained.

During the debate the French delegate, M. Jacques Kosciusko-Morizet said his country adopted the view that Portugal had a case to answer for the armed invasion of Guinea although the true nature of the intervention was not clear. However, Portugal had a responsibility, said M. Kosciusko-Morizet for activities which originated in its territories.
