  • Description

Fire blackened buildings dot the skyline of Asbury Park's predominantly Negro west side today (July 8) in the aftermath of three days of rioting between Negro youths and police.

Some of the fires set on Monday night were still burning on Tuesday (July 7) as unmanned hoses lay in the streets after angry crowds had chased firemen away.

The shopping streets are a shambles with stores broken into and looted, and more than 300 people have been arrested.

When violence spread into the White section of town on Sunday (July 5), 250 police armed with rifles, submachine guns and pepper gas were brought in to drive the Black youths out of the main business district.

Although police reportedly said they fired only into the air, more than 40 people, none of them police, were treated at hospitals for gunshot wounds.
