In the capital of Tanzania.. Dar es Salaam.. celebrations marking the 18th independence anniversary have reached their climax with a grand Presidential parade. During the tow-hour display on Sunday (9 December) Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere made a personal inspection of troops.
SYNOPSIS: The parade was mounted by the Tanzania people's Defence Force. It was greeted to impress not only the thousands of Tanzanian civilians who travelled to the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, but also visiting heads of state.
The celebrations offered for the first time since the invasion of Uganda the opportunity to parade troops...giving soldiers an international theatre for a show held, this time, without the backcloth of war. Messages of good wishes were sent by Cuba, Australia and Pakistan. But the guests of honour at the celebrations were the leaders of Papua New Guinea and Cape Verde. The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare and Cape Verde President and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Aristides Maria Pereira share the dais with President Nyerere and his Vice President Aboud Jumbe.
After reviewing the parade for two hours the President and his guests drove to the State House.
