Background: DR. WILLIAM F. UNSOELD, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF THE U.S. PEACE CORPS MISSION IN NEPAL, WAS ONE OF THE TWO AMERICANS WHO TRAVERSED EVEREST LAST MAY. HE AND THOMAS HORNBEIN CLIMBED EVEREST FROM THE WEST RIDGE AND CAME DOWN BY THE SOUTH COLUMN. IN DOING SO THE TWO MEN HAD TO SPEND A NIGHT IN THE OPEN AT 28,000 FEET WITHOUT FOOD OR OXYGEN AND DR. UNSOELD FROM FROSTBITE.
DR. UNSOELD WAS FLOWN TO KATHMANDU BY HELICOPTER WHERE, INSPITE OF TREATMENT BY AN EXPERIMENTAL DRUG FLOWN SPECIALLY FROM THE UNITED STATES, HA HAD TO HAVE AN OPERATION AMPUTATING ALL BUT ONE OF HIS TOES.
AFTER THE TWO AND A HALF HOUR OPERATION DR. UNSOELD AND HIS WIFE CHEERFULLY TALKED OF HIS OPERATION. HE CAN LIMP ABOUT BUT DOCTORS HAVE PRESCRIBED MAXIMUM REST FOR SOME WHILE. HE TOLD OUR CAMERAMAN THAT HE HOPES TO CONTINUE MOUNTAINEERING ON A SMALLER SCALE. HE THOUGHT HE MIGHT TAKE HIS WIFE UP THE MATTERHORN - A PEAK HE HAD CLIMBED "WHEN I WAS YOUNG."
