    GHANDHI: "They have brought victory to the Congress but as I said just now that we should not ignore the work done by the local workers in the local states and in the Hindi speaking states also. Defeat and failure is as much a part of life as success. As I always said, and you will remember that I said it at the height of the Bangladesh victory, that we should not be so elated by success or be completely dejected by defeat."

    Background: Former India Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi's continued domination of the Congress Party, despite its election defeat in March, was demonstrated on Friday (6 May) when her candidate for the party presidency won by a wide margin. The Victory went to former Home Minister Brahmananda Reddy who was directly responsible for administering the state of internal emergency which is blamed for the Congress Party's electoral downfall.

    SYNOPSIS: The election took place at the party's headquarters in New Delhi after a bitter two-day meeting of the party's national committee. The session started on Thursday (5 March) with a flag raising ceremony. Mrs Gandhi later gave an emotional speech.

    The defeated anti-Gandhi candidate was Siddhartha Shankar Ray.

    Mr Reddy won with a wide margin of 317 votes to 160 over Mr Ray.
