  • Description

Thousands of chanting demonstrators from throughout the United States converged on Washington today (28 August) in a massive plea for equal rights for Negroes.

At 11:15 A.M.police estimated the crowd at 70,000 --far fewer than the 150,000 the organizers of the march had predicted. But the weather was ideal and the marchers appeared to be in a holiday mood. The mass turnout was described by one observer as resembling a giant revival meeting.

At the foot of the Washington Monument, where they gathered for the eight-tenths of a mile trek to the Lincoln Memorial, they broke into a chant of "Freedom, freedom, freedom." Many carried signs demanding equal rights.

It was the largest demonstration ever in the nation's capital.
