  • Description

ABOUT 200 FARMERS FROM THE SIX MEMBER-NATIONS OF THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET MET IN BRUSSELS TODAY TO PROTEST AGAINST THE MAIN PROPOSALS OF A PLAN THAT COULD RADICALLY ALTER THE PATTERN OF AGRICULTURE IN THE COMMUNITY. BUT THE MINISTERS WHO WERE AT THE SAME TIME DISCUSSING THE PLAN FAILED TO REACH AN AGREEMENT.

THE SIX AGRICULTURE MINISTERS ENDED A TWO-DAY MEETING WITHOUT AGREEMENT ON THE PROPOSALS OF THE COMMON MARKET COMMISSION, PROPOSALS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO END THE COMMUNITY'S BUTTER AND MILK SURPLUSES BY FORCING FARMERS TO SWITCH TO MEAT PRODUCTION. THE DEADLINE SET FOR AGREEMENT IS 1ST APRIL.

THE PROTESTING FARMERS ARRIVED AT THEIR MEETING IN COACHES. THERE WAS A STRONG POLICE GUARD TO WATCH OVER THEM IN CASE OF DEMONSTRATIONS, BUT THERE WAS NO TROUBLE.

EVENTUALLY A DELEGATION OF 12 WAS ALLOWED TO SEE THE CHAIRMAN OF THE MINISTERS' MEETING, FRENCH AGRICULTURE MINISTERS M. EDGAR FAURE. THEY ALSO SAW THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE COMMISSION, DR. SICCO MANSHOLT, AUTHOR OF THE PLAN.
