  • Description

There have been reports recently that Cuba is strengthening her connections with a number of African nations -- particularly Angola. For three days last week (4, 5 & June), the Cuban Defence Minister. Raul Castro, paid a visit to the Congo for talks with President Marien Ngouabi.

SYNOPSIS: Senor Castro ended his visit on Friday (5 June) and was seen off at the airport by his opposite number, Congolese Defence Minister, Denis Sassou. But his main discussions had been with Head of State, President Ngouabi. They talked of the relations between their two countries and ways of improving economic cooperation. The two men praised what was called in the official communique, the "victory over Imperialism" in Angola. Cuban forces supported the now ruling Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in the recent civil war.

Senor Castro left Brazzaville for the Guinea capital of Conakry, where he met President Ahmed Sekou Toure, according to the official Cuban newspaper, 'Granma'. Guinea was one of several black African states which sent troops to support the MPLA. There have also been reports that Senor Castro visited Angola in May, but these are yet to be confirmed.
