Background: Mr Macmillan and his party arrived in Paris today by air. They were two and a half hours late because of fog in Paris. Mr Macmillan was originally expected at Le Bourget, the terminal for British European Airways, and it was here that a guard of honour as well as a large number of journalists and cameramen waited through the foggy morning until it was announced that the special aircraft from London would be landing at Orly, the main airport on the other side of the city.
It arrived just before 2 p.m. In a statement Mr Macmillan said he was sure his visit, though it was only short, would be useful " and I hope fruitful". He recalled that the closest links of friendship had existed between France and Britain for more than fifty years, through good and bad days, and he was certain that this policy had benefitted both countries. "In Great Britain we are determined to maintain and reaffirm that policy".
