  • Description

KIDNAPPED U.S. DIPLOMAT, LIEUTENANT COLONEL DONALD CROWLEY, WAS FREED LATE ON THURSDAY (26 MARCH) AFTER THREE DAYS IN THE HANDS OF REVOLUTIONARIES. TWENTY POLITICAL PRISONERS, RELEASED IN EXCHANGE FOR HIM, HAVE BEEN GRANTED ASYLUM IN MEXICO.

THE KIDNAPPING OF COLONEL CROWLEY, AIR ATTACHE AT THE U.S. EMBASSY IS SANTO DOMINGO, WAS CARRIED OUT BY OPPONENTS OF PRESIDENT BALAGUER CALLING THEMSELVES THE ANTI-RE-ELECTION COMMANDOS. THE DIPLOMAT WAS BLINDFOLDED FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION OF HIS CAPTURE, BUT HE HAS DESCRIBED THE CAPTORS AS COURTEOUS CONSIDERATE LEFTISTS WHO WOULD NOT HAVE HESITATED TO KILL HIM IF THE GOVERNMENT HAD REFUSED THEIR DEMAND. THEY ASKED THAT TWENTY NAMED PRISONERS BE RELEASED IN THE MAIN SQUARE AND THEN BE TAKEN TO THE EMBASSY OF THEIR CHOICE.

THE DOMINICAN GOVERNMENT DID NOT RELEASE THE PRISONERS IN THE MANNER SOUGHT BUT FLEW THEM STRAIGHT TO MEXICO WHERE THEY WERE GRANTED ASYLUM.

THE PRISONERS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ARCHBISHOP, ON THE FLIGHT, AS A SIGN OF THE DOMINICAN GOVERNMENT'S GOOD FAITH.
