  • Description

FINANCIAL TALKS BETWEEN THE CONGO AND BELGIUM ARE GOING AHEAD IN BRUSSELS AFTER BEING HELD UP BY A DISPUTE OVER PROTOCOL.

THE MEETING BETWEEN THE BELGIAN AND CONGOLESE MINISTERS GOT OFF TO A BAD START WHEN THE CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER, GENERAL LEONARD MULAMBA, COMPLAINED THAT HE HAD NOT BEEN MET AT THE AIRPORT BY HIS BELGIAN COUNTERPART, M. PAUL VANDEN BOEYNANTS.

INSTEAD, THE BELGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER, M. PIERRE HARMEL, WAS AT THE AIRPORT TO MEET THE VISITORS. BUT THE DISPUTE WAS SETTLED AMICABLY, AND THE TALKS ARE GOING AHEAD UNDER THE PRESIDENCY OF M. HARMEL.

THE CONGOLESE DELEGATION INCLUDED M. JUSTIN BOMBOKO, THE FOREIGN MINISTER, AND M. JEAN LITHO, THE MINISTER OF FINANCE. THE TALKS AT THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS IN BRUSSELS WILL DEAL MAINLY WITH PROBLEMS ARISING FROM THE HANDING OVER TO THE CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT OF A PORTFOLIO OF SHARES IN ABOUT SIXTY COMPANIES OPERATING IN THE CONGO. THE SHARES ARE WORTH ABOUT GBP180 MILLION.
