  • Description

In Manila, hundreds of thousands of Filipino people gathered on Thursday (December 15) to demonstrate support for President Ferdinand Marcos in national referendum, in which he seeks re-endorsement in his sixth year of martial law.

The rally, the biggest since martial law was imposed in 1972 and one of the biggest political demonstrations in many years, was organised at Rizal Park by the Metropolitan Manila Commission headed by its Governor and wife of the President, Mrs. Imelda Marcos.

Many people including government workers and members of the Kabataan Barangay National Youth Movement paraded behind bands and under large pro-government banners and colourful balloons proclaiming "YES NA YES" - the affirmative vote sought by the President.

Mrs. Marcos appeared, along with members of the cabinet and many others wearing T-shirts printed with a huge "YES" on the front, and followed by President Marcos.

Mrs. Marcos urged everyone to get out Saturday's voters to support her husband, whom she praised for achievements in his "New Society".

President Marcos told the roaring crowd, "We are met with new dangers and a new threat to the progress and to the welfare and the security of the entire republic. The threat comes from those who today question the principles of the new society."
