  • Description

A NATO naval task force, including ships from the United States, the United Kingdom, Holland, West Germany, Belgium and Portugal, arrived in New York Harbour on Friday (8 August) on a week-long public relations exercise.

The mission is part of NATO's new approach to public relations. From a passive policy on public information, NATO officially changed this year to a very active policy.

The New York visit is to remind people that NATA is still strong, despite Turkey's recent closure of U.S. bases vital to NATO, and that there are still Portuguese ships in the fleet, despite the fact that a military triumvirate rules the country.

Naval officers on board the vessels answered all questions from newsmen, if a little vaguely at times.

The shows of strength was obvious -- the ships were all equipped with missiles, sonar, radar, guns, helicopters.
