  • Description

SWEDISH TROOPS OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE, WHO ARRIVED IN NICOSIA LAST WEEK, HAVE NOW TAKEN UP PATROL DUTY IN THE PAPHOS DISTRICT OF WESTERN CYPRUS. THE SWEDISH SOLDIERS HAVE TAKEN OVER CAMPS FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY BRITISH TROOPS. THE AREA THEY ARE PATROLLING WAS THE SCENE OF BITTER FIGHTING SOME WEEKS AGO BUT IS NOW COMPARATIVELY QUIET. ALTOGETHER ABOUT SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY SWEDISH SOLDIERS ARE ENCAMPED AND ANOTHER THREE HUNDRED ARE EXPECTED SOON.

THE BATTALION HEADQUARTERS OF THE SWEDISH CONTINGENT, UNDER THE COMMAND OF COLONEL JONAS WAERN, IS NOW ESTABLISHED IN THE COPPER MINING PORT OF XEROS.

THE SWEDISH TROOPS HAVE RECEIVED THE SAME ORDERS ABOUT THE USE OF WEAPONS AS OTHER CONTINGENTS OF THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE IN CYPRUS. A SWEDISH MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THEY COULD USE WEAPONS ONLY WHEN IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY IN SELF-DEFENCE. HE ADDED THAT THEY COULD ATTACK TO DEFEND PEOPLE OR OTHER TROOPS WHO WERE BEING ATTACKED. HOWEVER HE POINTED OUT THAT "WE WOULD NOT HESITATE TO USE WEAPONS TO DEFEND THE LIVES OF OUR TROOPS IF NECESSARY."
