  • Description

Thousands of Britons began paying their last respects to their former King, the Duke of Windsor, today (Friday) when the lying in state began at Saint George's Chapel, Windsor.

The Duke's body, which had been brought overnight from the Royal Air Force base at Benson, in Oxfordshire, where it had been flown from France, was guarded by members of the Household Guard.

The mourners began filing past the coffin at 11 a.m. in a scene of great dignity and solemnity.

The coffin, made of English oak, was covered by the Duke's coat of arms and his personal standard.

Sunlight filtered through the massive expanse of 29 leadlight windows overlooking the Coffin. Twenty-nine kings are represented on the windows, which date from the 16th century.

The Duke's body will remain in St. George's Chapel until the funeral on Monday.

Members of the Royal Family are expected to pay their last respects to the Duke during the lying in state, but the Duchess of Windsor, due to arrive in London today, may not visit the chapel.
