  • Description

TURKEY HAS BEGUN EXPELLING 1,100 GREEK NATIONALS. THE FIRST OF THEM WERE DEPORTED ON WEDNESDAY WHEN THEY WERE DRIVEN IN TRUCKS TO THE GREEK FRONTIER.

THE EXPULSIONS FOLLOW THE ABROGATION OF THE 1930 GRECO-TURKISH TREATY GIVING GREEKS SPECIAL PREFERENCE AND PRIVILEGES DENIED TO OTHER FOREIGNERS IN TURKEY.

TURKEY REFUSED TO RENEW THE AGREEMENT BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT TOLERATE THE GREEKS' PRESENCE WHILE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS IN CYPRUS WERE DENIED "HUMAN RIGHTS".

AMONG THE DEPORTEES WERE ELDERLY PEOPLE, INCLUDING A 98-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WHO HAD TO BE CARRIED, AND CHILDREN. EACH WAS RESTRICTED TO 200 TURKISH LIRA (ABOUT GBP7 STERLING), THE MAXIMUM IN CASH A PERSON CAN TAKE OUT OF TURKEY.

THEY HAD TO ABANDON THEIR PROPERTY AND MOST OF THEIR PERSONAL EFFECTS, AND GREECE, WHICH HAS TAKEN "A SERIOUS VIEW" OF THE EXPULSIONS, HAS RESERVED ALL RIGHT TO CLAIM COMPENSATION.

THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT SAID LAST WEEK THAT A FURTHER 4,000 GREEKS WOULD BE EXPELLED BY 1966. GREECE HAS PROTESTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS COMMITTEE OF HUMAN RIGHTS.
