Background: The second round of the men's Gulf States swimming championships was held in Abu Dhabi last friday (20 June).
Teams from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates competed in the championships.Palestine also entered with the status of "honorary team".
The President of the U.A.E. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, was guest-of-honour at the championships and watched as contestant s plunges into the Arabian Gulf and swam the course. He presented medals to the winners.
The main placing were: Najeeb Mousalli (Saudi Arabia ) 1; Abdul Aziz Humaidi (Kuwait) 2; Ali Maki (Saudi Arbia) 3.
SYNOPSIS: The President of the United Arab Emirates -- Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan -- was the guest-of-honour at the second round of the men's Gulf States swimming championships in Abu Dhabi, last Friday. The Sheikh and his entourage of government and sporting officials walked along the white beach sands to the official dais before the main event.
The contestants plunged into the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf and waited for the starting gun.
The starter fired his pistol and the race began.
Teams from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates competed in the event. Palestine entered a contingent with the status of "honorary team".
Sheikh Zayed watched closely.
Finally the field leaders began to swim into view of the crowd on the beach.
As the field leaders crossed the finish line on the beach they were mobbed by spectators and congratulated on their performances.
The national flags of the place-getters were raised as Sheikh Zayed presented a gold medal to Najeeb Mousalli of saudi Arabia.
Ali Maki also took third place for Saudi Arabia. Kuwait's Abdul Aziz Humaidi was second. A Kuwaiti swimmer also took fourth placing.
As Sheikh Zayed and the large crowd looked on the winners raised clapped hands in the spirit of sportsmanship and Arab brotherhood.
