    BRITAIN'S LARGEST WARSHIP, THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER H.M.S. EAGLE, ARRIVED OFF THE COAST OF ADEN, IN SOUTHERN ARABIA, LAST SATURDAY TO PREPARE FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH TROOPS WHEN THE PROTECTORATE ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE LATER THIS MONTH. THE CARRIER HAS SINCE BEEN CARRYING OUT OPERATIONAL EXERCISES IN ADEN WATERS.

    THE 500,000-TON AIRCRAFT CARRIER EAGLE IS THE "SPEARHEAD" OF BRITAIN'S WITHDRAWAL FROM SOUTH ARABIA. RECENTLY ARRIVED FROM SINGAPORE, THE CARRIER WILL PRESENT THE MOST FORMIDABLE DETERRENT TO ANY NATIONALIST ATTEMPTS TO HARASS THE BRITISH TROOPS AS THEY WITHDRAW. H.M.S. EAGLE CARRIES UNITS OF BUCCANEER S.2. STRIKE AIRCRAFT AND THE SEA VIXEN ALL-WEATHER INTERCEPTOR AIRCRAFT.

    THE EAGLE'S EXERCISE OFF THE COAST OF ADEN HAVE INCLUDED TRAILING A TARGET FOR FLIGHTS OF BUCCANEERS TO ATTACK, USING 25-POUND (11 KILOS) PRACTICE BOMBS IN PLACE OF THEIR USUAL 1,000-POUND (453 KILOS) BOMBS. EAGLE'S CLOSE-RANGE DEFENCE IS PROVIDED BY EIGHT RADAR-CONTROLLED 4.5 INCH GUNS IN FOUR TWIN TURRETS AND SIX SEACAT SURFACE-TO-AIR GUIDED MISSILE MOUNTINGS, EACH OF WHICH CAN BE LOADED WITH FOUR MISSILES.
