    The Mayors of Munich in West Germany and Sapporo in Japan signed a pact of friendship on Monday (28 August) recording both cities' involvement in the 1972 Olympic Games.

    The Winter Olympics were held in Sapporo last February.

    SYNOPSIS: Citizens from Sapporo in Japan met civic leaders from Munich on Monday to cement the Olympic bond between the two cities.

    Mayor Takeshi Itagaki from Sapporo and the Japanese Ambassador to West Germany, Mr. Fumihiko Kai, met their German hosts in Munich's ancient Rathaus, or Town Hall
    Mayor Itagaki signed parchments recording the Olympic link between Sapporo, which staged the Winter Olympics last February, and Munich. Oberburgermeister George Kronwaitter also signed the papers.

    The Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Kai, added his signature to those of the Mayors in the huge Golden Book in the Munich Town Hall.

    The Olympic Games become the latest of the historic achievements of the city of Munich to be entered in the Golden Book.
