  • Description

CYPRUS - WHERE DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS THERE'S BEEN A HINT THAT THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT MAY OPPOSE A FURTHER EXTENSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE KEEPING FORCE MANDATE IN THE ISLAND. THE HINT CAME FROM THE MINISTER OF LABOUR, MR. PAPADOPOULOS, WHO ACCUSED THE FORCE OF TACITLY APPROVING "PROVOCATIVE EXPANSIONIST MOVES" BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN THE KYRENIA MOUNTAINS AND ALONG THE 'GREEN LINE' IN NICOSIA.

ON MONDAY, THE U.N. FORCE TOOK ACTION ALONG THE 'GREEN LINE' WHEN THEY SET UP A ROAD BLOCK AND INSPECTED A GROUP OF FORMER GREEK SHOPS WHICH HAVE CAUSED SOME DISPUTE BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES. ON APRIL 16TH, A BAN WAS IMPOSED ON ALL TURKISH CYPRIOTS ENTERING OR LEAVING THE TURKISH QUARTER OF THE CITY, AFTER A TURKISH CYPRIOT HAD FIRED TWO SHOTS WHEN CAUGHT IN ONE OF THE SHOPS. AFTER THE INSPECTION, THE GREEK CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE BAN WAS BEING LIFTED.

(THE U.N. PEACE FORCE MANDATE IS DUE TO END ON JUNE 27TH. THE WITHDRAWAL BY THE FORCE IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY POSITIVE MOVE TOWARDS A POLITICAL SETTLEMENT, COULD WELL PROVE DISASTROUS.)
