Background: The Spanish Minister of Public works, General Vigon, recently made a tour of inspection of the Levant district to view the progress of dam-building which is being carried out on a grand scale by his department.
On his tour he arrived at the Alarcon dam situated on the Jucar river and contemplated the effects of the reserve--which contained, at that time, scarcely six per cent of its total capacity.
The Minister and his retinue of officials visited also the Generalissimo dam on the Turia river which, at present, contains only about 64 million cubic metres of its 260 million metres total capacity.
Situated about 72 Kilometres from Valencia, the dam could not prevent the dramatic flood which started in the district of Liria, 32 Kilometres down river where it is estimated that 404 million lites of water fell in 21 hours, covering an area of 2,200 square kilometres.
In Valencia, General Vigon inspects the heavy equipment of his department who, with the Army Engineers, carried out the task of removing 250,000 cubic metres of mud from the squares and streets of the city.
The Sichar Dam, on the Mijares river, was also on the General's itinerary. This has a capacity of 53 million cubic metres.
