  • Description

WRECKAGE OF A UNITED NATIONS DC-6B AIRLINER, CARRYING U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL DAG HAMMARSKJOELD TO PEACE TALKS IN NDOLA, NORTHERN RHODESIA, WITH PRESIDENT TSHOMBE OF KATANGA, WAS FOUND LATE SEPT 17 IN A FOREST ONLY SEVEN MILES FROM ITS INTENDED DESTINATION. MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S BODY WAS IDENTIFIED AMONG TWELVE OTHER BODIES FOUND STREWN AROUND THE WRECK.

THE DC-6B HAD PLOUGHED THROUGH THE TREES, LEAVING A PATHWAY SOME 200-YARDS LONG, SMASHED INTO THE GROUND AND DISINTEGRATED. ALL THAT WAS LEFT WAS A GREY CIRCLE OF ASH, AN ENGINE COWLING AND PROPELLER, A SMALL PART OF THE FUSELAGE, AND SOME CHARRED PERSONAL EFFECTS OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICIALS. TWO OTHER BODIES WERE LATER FOUND TWO MILES FROM THE WRECK. THE ONLY SURVIVOR, AN AMERICAN SECURITY GUARD, WAS SERIOUSLY BURNED AND IS NOW RECEIVING TREATMENT AT NDOLA HOSPITAL.

AN AFRICAN CHARCOAL BURNER FIRST FOUND THE SMOULDERING WRECKAGE, SOME FIFTEEN HOURS AFTER THE AIRCRAFT WAS DECLARED OVERDUE AT NDOLA. THEN IT WAS SPOTTED BY ONE OF THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN AIR FORCE PLANES USED IN AN ALL OUT SEARCH.

SERGEANT HAROLD JULIAN, THE SURVIVING SECURITY GUARD, IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THE PLANE WAS IN CIRCUIT AROUND NDOLA, BUT CHANGED DIRECTION ON MR. HAMMARSKJOELD'S INSTRUCTIONS. SOON AFTERWARDS THERE WAS A BIG EXPLOSION, FOLLOWED BY TWO SMALLER ONES. AN INVESTIGATION IS STILL IN PROGRESS.
