  • Description

More than 250 archers from 25 countries competed with bow and arrow on Wednesday (28 August) in the jointly held Fourth European Archery Championship and the Fourth World Field Archery Championships near Zagreb, Yugoslavia.

Field Archery, as opposed to target archery derives from the pastime of long ago, known as "roving". Groups of archers would go out into the fields or woodland. One of them would pick a target, such as a tree stump, and the archer whose arrow came nearest to the "mark" would choose the next target and so on.

The modern sport of field archery is practised on areas of land known as "courses" on which are laid out a number of targets or butts, usually in "units" of fourteen. As with golf courses, groups of competitors move from target to target scoring as they go.

In the Zagreb competition archers shoot varying numbers of arrows from distances ranging from 15 - 60 metres at targets that vary from 30 cms. to 60 cms.

When all the arrows had been shot the new World Men's Champions in the field competitions were D. Brothers of the United States and L. Berrgen of Sweden. The winning ladies included L. Lessard of Canada and Italian Miss Dapolan.

The ancient sport of archery has been gaining in strength in recent years and was readmitted to the Olympic Games in time for Munich 1972.
